What’s happening now in Cebu for the past years, where people can’t go to a local dance without getting killed?
Today, Cebu’s The Freeman reports two separate incidents where violence bloomed during benefit dances where one– a teenager was injured during a possibly “gang-related” shoot-out and the other– a teacher was killed in a botched robbery right in front of his students.
In Mabolo, Cebu City, alleged “Crips” members shot and injured a 13-year-old during a benefit dance shortly before midnight yesterday.
According to witnesses, the victim was being chased by the suspects, one of whom allegedly continued shooting the victim using an unknown caliber of gun until the victim slumped to the ground wounded but still managed to shout for help.
Another violent incident occurred after a benefit dance in Daanbantayan town where a Physical Education teacher got into a heated altercation with two yet to be identified suspects who tried to hold up him of his belongings and ended up shooting the teacher in the face, right in front of two students who were accompanying him.
These two incidents are only few that are reported each year where benefit dances, public discos designed for people to congregate and celebrate are often marred by such violent acts.
These incidents show, particularly the first, how much official police presence is so necessary during such events. Police are often “reactionary”, they act after the crime is committed then gets reported for them to catch the suspects when it is so much better and helpful for police to be proactive, establish measures to prevent such crimes from happening.
Police should not only be agents of justice to the victims but protectors for the people from being victims…
